Choose a professional background
The beauty of Zoom or Google Meet is that those platforms allow you to upload backgrounds or choose from a variety of virtual backgrounds so that you can have a professional background during your interview. Using a blank or professional background shows the interviewer that you’re organized and pay attention to detail. It also saves you the worry of trying to find an empty corner of your home or apartment.
Try to maintain your focus
As your interviewer is speaking and explaining the role, try to focus on their window on the screen. Demonstrate that you’re paying as much attention on Zoom as you would in person, and nod if they ask you questions or are bringing the conversation back to your experience.
Be mindful of where your eyes are
Eye contact is such an important part of an interview, and this holds true virtually. Sometimes, reading notes next to your laptop or looking up at a monitor can make an interviewer feel like you aren't looking at them. Be mindful of where you’re looking on Zoom. Try to maintain eye contact with the interviewer by looking at your camera or their window. If you want to look at notes during the interview, we recommend a split screen or placing your notebook or phone directly in front of your computer (but not blocking your camera) so you're still looking forward.
Wear professional attire
Even if your interview is virtual, try to dress up as if you would be interviewing with the company in person. Don't worry if you’re unsure of the company’s dress code, it is always better to be over dressed than underdressed. When in doubt, dress in business attire (think: collared shirts, blazers, or a nice sweater).
Join a few minutes early
Using Zoom or any other virtual meeting platform can lead to technical difficulties. Join your interview meeting at least five minutes before your scheduled time. This is also a good time to practice using your mute button and virtual background before the interviewer joins the call!
