GenAI can be used to make you more knowledgeable and efficient.

Research and context

GenAI tools are a great way to conduct research for your job search. You can use GenAI tools to identify companies you might not have found yourself, to see who is growing in your industry, and to create target company lists. Here are some sample prompts:

  • What companies are hiring product managers in New York City right now?
  • What are the fastest growing FinTech companies that have offices in NYC?
  • I’m a software engineer who is super passionate about sports- what are some job opportunities available in NYC right now where I could combine these interests?
  • Will you make me a list of the top fifteen FinTechs by revenue in NYC?

If you’ve got an interview lined up or you’re actively applying to a company, you can also use GenAI tools to research the organization. This will help you show up informed and prepared.

  • Tell me a little bit about Company X
  • Who are Company X’s top competitors?
  • How does Company X make money?
  • I’m sharing a job description, what would a typical day to day in a job like this look like?
  • How does this job fit into Company X’s bottom line?

This research is helpful in a job search for a few reasons. Primarily because it is so important to understand the business you’re in, even if you’re not in a revenue generating role. It is easy to get so caught up in our own work that we miss the big picture. The best operational/ technical talent understands how their work fits into the organization they work in. So whether you’re in HR, IT, research and development, or anywhere else in an organization- get curious! Generative AI tools are a great starting place for information like this. Understanding the business well will make you stand out amongst other candidates.

Questions

We mentioned in our previous blog that GenAI tools can be used to prepare sample interview questions to practice with, but another great use is to generate questions for you to ask others. Say you’re meeting with a senior leader in your organization, attending an event where you could meet leaders in your industry, or interviewing for a job- you can generate some questions to ask. Give ChatGPT some context (like a job description or a brief explanation of who you are/ what your ask is) and ask for help generating questions to ask. For example:

  • I’m interviewing for this job (insert job description), what are some questions I can ask at the end of the interview that show that I understand this business and I’m serious about the role?
  • I’m attending a panel discussion of senior leaders at large PR organizations. The topic is “An outlook on PR in 2025: How Generative AI will impact marketing teams and earned media.” What are some questions I could ask at the end of the panel?

Messages

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: you should send a thank you note after every interview. You should also connect with anyone you meet in your job search on LinkedIn and send them a nice note when you do. Generative AI can help you draft messages and shorten them for different platforms. For example, you want to send a nice LinkedIn connection request after an interview, but your current draft is too long for the 200 character limit. Here are some prompts you can use:

  • Shorten the connection request below to 200 characters
  • Draft a 200 character connection request that includes these elements: thank you for your time, I really appreciated learning more about how Company X is transforming payments, I hope to stay connected with you.

In conclusion, there are lots of ways to use generative AI to aid your job search. You don’t need to be using it to write your resume or cover letter in order to benefit. GenAI can be used to make you more knowledgeable and efficient.
